According to former Resident Evil director and current Director of the upcoming The Evil Within survival horror game, Shinji Mikami, he claims that players aren’t as easy to scare as before. He recently spoke in an article to EDGE magazine:

“Not much has changed when it comes to instilling terror in the player,” he said. “But people have got used to the tropes of horror and they know what’s coming next, so in that sense it is harder to make them afraid.

“The scariest parts will be when you encounter enemies that cannot be killed with a gun. Even if you shoot them they won’t die, so you’ll have to run or use a trap to beat them. That should be fun – and also scary.

“Making games is always like a rollercoaster: really fun times, but also really busy times. When you ride a rollercoaster, the uphill part is scary and fraught and lasts for a long time, and the downhill part – the fun, exhilarating part – is over in a flash.”

I disagree that people aren’t hard to scare these days especially people always going to see movies like Paranormal Activity every time they make a new one. My opinion on why the creator is so pessimistic about scary games is because he recently came out and said that Resident Evil’s old “scary gameplay” wasn’t moving units so he had to focus on action. Sure, I could cough it up to saying that it’s another franchise trying to be like Call of Duty because that’s what sells but I’m not trying to sound like a broken record. Dark Souls always scared the hell out of me and it’s not Survival Horror. Fear in gaming comes from feeling of vulnerability it comes from the feeling of facing the unknown when facing an enemy you’ve never seen before ferociously attacking you.

The truth is gaming as we know is stuck in a gun rut as consumers always expect that went put in front of a monster, it’s expected for them to shoot it. It’s an ignorant mindset of the lowest common denominator consumer base of video games these days.
