GameSpy’s shutdown, scheduled for May 31, was announced last month and despite Battlefront 2’s Steam page suggesting that online functionality would come to an end on May 31, Scott Kevill assures gamers that they’ll still be able to play via GameRanger.
“People are already playing it just fine on GameRanger, and will continue to after May 31,” Kevill said on Reddit. “I’ve already simulated it with GameSpy blocked and cut-off.”
The third-party technology has been used by hundreds of developers and publishers to host online services for their games. Different clients are handling this in different ways; EA is “working on finding a transition,” Rockstar is patching “specific” older titles.
