Following the underwhelming sales of Kinect Sports Rivals, Microsoft’s first party studio Rare was hit with 16 layoffs. 150 people worked on the game, so this layoff isn’t too huge, but it’s still a loss.
Xbox made the following statement on the matter:
“At Xbox, our goal is to constantly create new fun, social and interactive entertainment experiences. As part of Rare’s commitment to this goal, we have made a decision to change our development process and methodology at Rare to best support our future projects, this has led to us reviewing the skills and the makeup of our development teams in our business.”
“Rare continues to invest in our people and future projects.”
If this isn’t an indicator of the end of motion controlled gaming, I don’t know what is. People have been over motion controls for a while now. Casual gamers have moved on to mobile gaming, and hardcore gamers were never really into it to begin with. Let’s just hope Microsoft begins utilizing Rare to its full potential.
