Gugure! Kokkuri-san Review (Pilot)

I’ve seen a few comedies in my time, and with the past summer anime season that just passed, I think it’s safe to say that we all needed a new comedy-based anime series to lift our spirits and get us back on the saddle. Gugure! Kokkuri-san is a refreshing comedy that revolves around a young girl named Kohina, who secludes herself in her home, all alone, and eats only instant ramen, whilst calling herself a “doll.”

She summons Kokkuri-san, a fox spirit, and soon tries to banish him from her home using salt. However, originally planning to haunt the young girl, Kokkuri-san instead chooses to haunt Kohina in order to watch over her, seeing that she’s living all alone and does not have a balanced diet whatsoever.

The animation is fresh, it’s funny, and it feels like an all-around feel-good anime to sit down and watch and have yourself a good laugh. I can tell there are a few plot points that are about to surface, to give this series purpose and perhaps dive into some character development, since Kohina’s character development was completely thrown out the window in the first episode.

Let me elaborate: Kohina, in a fit of rage after Kokkuri-san took away all her ramen, attempted to fight him. And he, in turn, chose to leave and not come back. In this small period of time, Kohina, who is supposed to be EMOTIONLESS, begins to cry because she misses having him around. In this moment, she asks him, “Why am I crying?” Which is good, I guess, but that could have been some serious character development that could have been established later on in the series, and they’re throwing it in within the first episode? Kind of disappointed here.

The character designs in this series remind me a lot of Kamisama Hajimemashita, in which Kokkuri-san resembles the fox demon Tomoe. Those similarities aside, Kohina’s character design is completely hilarious, as she looks like a tiny little chibi girl the majority of the time.

So far, I’m curious as to what happens next, and maybe I’ll stick with this series as it progresses.

What did you guys think? Did you enjoy the first episode? What animes are you watching, and which ones are you choosing to drop this anime season? Let us know in the comments!
