When I posted our April Fools day prank of the New 3DS getting localized, we actually received a lot of backlash from passionate fans of the little machine.  Admittedly, it was pretty funny but this time the standard New 3DS might actually be making its way to the United States. In an interview with Kotaku, Reggie had this to say:

“So we’ve got nothing to announce here. We’ve certainly taken note of all of the readers and consumers that expressed desire for the base model. We analyzed the results in Japan and saw the lion’s share of the volume was on the XL model, and that’s with no 2DS existing in the Japanese market. And so as we thought about what’s the best line-up for us we thought the new XL and 2DS would be our best line-up. Not going to make any promises but, you know, I would suggest to your readers that they stay tuned and maybe some special SKUs might show up.”

From a business standpoint, it makes sense. Nintendo will most likely try to get as much out the New 3DS as possible before its eventual replacement.  Nintendo also seems to be trying to stretch the lifespan of the New 3DS, hinting at more exclusive games for the platform that will hit the eShop:

“There are digital games coming out that are specific to New Nintendo 3DS.”

This should be interesting to see what Nintendo has in store for its handheld, especially with talk surrounding their future platform, codenamed: NX, which could potentially replace both 3DS and Wii U.
