Super Smash Bros. Melee is Confirmed For EVO 2014

Great news for Smash fans everywhere: EVO has announced that Super Smash Bros. Melee is officially joining the EVO 2014 lineup! Previously, a spot was reserved for the game while the EVO team was in talks with Nintendo about Melee making an appearance, and now the game has been officially confirmed for the major FGC event.

This marks the 2nd consecutive year that the 13 year-old game will make an appearance at the event, with Mango taking the victory over Wobles in a Fox vs. Ice Climbers set in Grand Finals. At last year’s EVO, Melee became the 2nd most-watched fighting game in history reaching over 130,000 concurrent viewers, only being topped by the Marvel Finals that followed the Melee stream. This means that with no doubt we can expect Melee’s showing this year to possibly be even bigger than before.

[UPDATE] Melee is also officially confirmed to be going to MLG Anaheim this year on June 20th-22nd.

The Smash scene has been on a huge rise in recent times, mostly in-part due to the huge showing the game had at last year’s EVO (as well as the amazing Smash Documentary). This is definitely huge for the game and it’s passionate community, as it will continue to help the Smash scene get back into more bigger and mainstream FGC events.

Melee will be joining the likes of Ultra Street Fighter IV, Killer Instinct, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Injustice, King of Fighters XIII, and BlazBlue Chrono Phantasm. EVO 2014 is shaping up to be a truly spectacular event for fighting game fans anywhere. You won’t want to miss it!

  1. This should be a Brawl Tournament. Melee is for lazy gamers dat can’t win without Wave-Dashing. Brawl was good to pick up and play and harder to master. Brawl should be the main event, but butthurt Melee fanboys can’t win at Brawl… They don’t know how to move fast is the common complaint. They Weak…

    • That doesn’t make much sense. How are Melee players lazy, yet they play the more technical Smash game? Character control is much looser, the game is much faster, has L-Cancelling, Wavedashing, close proximity ledge grabbing, etc. Melee is extremely hard to master on a professional level, so how is the community lazy?

Brawl on the other hand is intentionally much slower and far less technical. Sakurai himself admitted that the game was made for the more casual crowd that came with the Wii. So why should the toned-down Smash be at EVO and not the one that was actually made for the hardcore players?

  2. As it should. Smashbros is more interesting than other beat em ups. 3ds version day 1 😀
