Despite Struggles Nintendo Returns to Profit

Today we have some really good news regarding Nintendo. The company has revealed that they have earned a total of $132 million in profit, from April to September. That is pretty impressive when considering Nintendo recorded a $91 million loss from April to June. From my understanding, this is a surprising announcement for investors and analysts, as they were expecting Nintendo to record a loss for this quarter. I am a little surprised myself.

The primary reason for this turnaround in obvious, the 3DS is still putting up big numbers. Super Smash Bros for 3DS had a stellar launch for the handheld, selling around 3.2 million units worldwide since its release in Japan. Tomodachi Life was a bit of a wild card in terms of how well it would sell but after making its debut outside of Japan in June, it also did very well, selling about 1.3 million units.

On the Wii U side, the hardware sales have more than doubled during the last two quarters, selling 1.1 million Wii U consoles worldwide. While that really isn’t impressive, it certainly beats the 460,000 number that they put up this time last year. Wii U software sales were around 9.4 million units shipped. Nintendo didn’t elaborate but I think it is safe to assume that Mario Kart 8 was a huge contributor to that number.

Despite all of their struggles Nintendo is still finding ways to make money. With Super Smash Brothers for Wii U on the way next month, along with the arrival of Amiibos, Nintendo could be looking at a very successful holiday season. The New 3DS could also provide a much needed spark to their handheld hardware sales, when it releases in the States next year. It will be interesting to see how everything plays out.
