“Edge Hogging” is no more in Smash Bros. 4 (+ More details on new gameplay mechanics)

Not too long ago, head developer of Super Smash Bros. 4, Sakurai, shared this image on Miiverse with the following information

Pic of the day. There are many changes being made to attack and defense options for grabbing edges. In this picture, Link is actually trumping Mario’s grab.

Some other changes include:
-Air time and accumulated damage will determine your period of invincibility while hanging on an edge.
-Grab controls will no longer be affected by whether you have above or below 100% damage.

Wow, so it looks like the strategy of edge guarding will be no more. For those unaware, edge guarding is a strategy many skilled players would use to prevent the opponent who’s fallen off the stage by purposely grabbing onto the ledge so that your opponent can’t grab onto it to recover. Pretty much leading to their demise. Was a pretty fun trick to use, especially when executed correctly. Unsure about how I feel about the removal of it but I’m sure it won’t damage the game at all (for me at least).

What do you guys think? Does this change irritate you, or are you glad they finally changed this?

  1. Edge grabbing all the way! No seriously though as long as the game feels and plays like melee I’m good.

  2. Naruto2-point0 says:

I’m glad its gone. Its a cheap move. Get a KO like a real man.
