With more advanced technology being developed everyday, the narrative pushed by some is that time is running out for consoles. Naturally it is difficult for consumers to think of a gaming space not occupied by the console of their preference or multiple. This has lead to a debate that is currently ongoing about what will come next and the future of gaming.
These talks are not only happening on a consumer level but a corporate one as well, and our newest example of this is a statement given by Jim Ryan, the SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) President and CEO. While speaking with CNET he had this to say:
“I sat there in 2012 and listened to all sorts of smart people tell me about mobile and that the PS4 was going to be the most terrible failure ever.” “The logic was actually hard to fault. But we believed in that product then, we believe in this next generation product now. Who knows how it might evolve? Hybrid models between console and some sort of cloud model? Possibly that. I just don’t know. And if I did know, I wouldn’t tell you.”
“Who knows what the world looks like in five years’ time? When you’ve got these big, very large companies coming into your space, I think simply viewing the world in the terms you viewed it in the past 25 years, with the competition you’ve had over the past 25 years, is probably not a very sensible approach to take.”
This gives us an important look into the industry and allows us to see that the future is indeed uncertain. What are your thoughts on the subject? Let us know in the comments and keep it locked to GaminRealm for all your gaming news and next gen updates.
