The Last of Us: Milk of the Year Edition

Yesterday, Sony announced that The Last of Us: Game of the Year Edition would be coming to the PS3 on November 11, making this the third release of the game.

This special edition is to include the Left Behind DLC, the Abandoned and Reclaimed Territories multiplayer DLC, and the Grounded Mode difficulty. So far it has only been confirmed for a European release, but plans for it coming elsewhere may be underway.

In my opinion, this seems like a ridiculous idea. The Last of Us originally came to the PS3 just last year and this year they already made a completely remastered version for the PS4. While the enhanced visuals received a lot of praise, even that version was asking a bit much. Usually if a game is going to be remastered, a company would wait a few years. This didn’t bother me too much though since they were on two different platforms and people who may not have been able to afford a PS4 could play the game, while people who bought a PS4 and never played they original could play the enhanced version. Still a stretch, but fair enough I suppose. On the other hand, it’s a slap in the face to those who own both consoles, played the original, and are now taunted with an enhanced version. These people may not want to but the same game all over again, but are now missing out on what Naughty Dog claims to be the “definitive” version. Again, a bit unfair, but works out for enough people to justify it.

Now we have the same exact game again coming to a last generation console with all the DLC built in. What is the point of this? Why release the same game three times in different variations within a years time? It’s extremely excessive. I understand it’s a great game and very popular, but that’s a lot. I doubt the amount of people who own a PS3 and haven’t played the Last of Us but want to is very high at all. Not to mention, those of us who bought the original and then had to buy the DLC separately now feel cheated. If we waited a year, we could’ve gotten everything included.

I know it’s only a European release so far, but it’s relatively likely we’ll see this coming to North America sometime in the near future. Is Sony really this pressed for titles right now?

Those are just my thoughts. What do you think? Is there a point to this I may be missing? Let us know in the comments.

  1. The enhanced edition for ps4 makes alot of sense since 30% of Ps4 owners didnt own a Ps3. A Goty edition for ps3 feels unnecesery thou. Its not uncommen to release Goty editions of games a year after they are released, Bethesda does it with all elders scrolls and fallout games, EA does it now with Bf4. A cheap way to maby make a buck, and it doesnt take any resources from development team. They just add in all dlc and print a new cover.
